The installation process is quite simple, just follow the instructions on the screen, CD-ROM drive won't be detected, unfortunately the 'RTM' version of OS/2 expects all kinds of 'weird' adapters and drives except plain IDE. As for graphics, just choose VGA, we will install the S3 drivers later.
After the basic installation is finished, time for some more disk swapping and installing the XR_6200 Service Pak. Again, as with the 2.0 release, just boot from the first CSF disk to start the update.
Then, after couple of reboots, time for some more installing. This time, the latest public FixPak XR_B108 for OS/2 2.11 released in 1996 - build 6.676. Finally, this FixPak lets us configure the IDE CD-ROM we have by simply adding the following line to config.sys:
BASEDEV=IBMIDECD.FLT
After we are on XR_B108 service level we can install the proper video drivers and change the resolution to at least 800×600@65K colors.
Note: when I tried to use the 16M colors, I got quite psychedelic desktop:
One of the advertisements from IBM for OS/2 stated that it is 'Better DOS than DOS' - and by looking at the following picture, I agree they were right:
FixPak Installation Order:
XR_6200 (Base System)
XR_B108 (Base System)
Boot Speed:
In Virtual PC 2007 on Pentium M 2.1GHz the OS/2 2.11 system boots in 14 seconds.
