Updating i915GM drivers

The latest officially available driver for Intel 915G/915GM Express chipset for Windows XP is release 14.25.50 from January 17, 2007. This driver also includes support for the newer i945. However, there is even newer driver for 945 mobile graphics, release 14.27. But it will not install on 915.

I did compare of the extracted files, and to my surprise, the difference is only in the igxp32.inf file - in the newer driver Intel simply excluded the definitions for i915 chipset. By simply copying and pasting the missing information from the 14.25.50 driver I was able to pass the initial check of compatible hardware and install the driver that was not supposed to be installed.

The only 'problem' I encountered so far is that the installer complains the driver is not WHQL for my chipset. Oh well, I can live with that.

I tried couple of games and some benchmarks, it performs a bit better that the older driver, but still it wouldn't allow me to play Oblivion or Gothic III.

And there is one more thing coming to my mind:
Intel officially states that i915 graphics 'due to hardware and technical reasons' cannot run Windows Vista with Aero, so there are no Vista drivers available. But it makes me wonder: can the 945 drivers can be modified this way to work with 915 chipset to enable Aero on them? Might as well try it soon, but I expect Vista to be more picky when it comes to unsigned drivers…

May 2 Update: I checked Intel's website, there is even newer driver for i945 and Windows XP, version 14.29 from April 20, 2007. With the above trick it works as well!

Is it possible for you to do the same for the 915 chipset as well for vista. You had mentioned that you would give it a shot with vista, I hope you get a chance to. There is a world out there waiting for wddm drivers for the 915 graphics chipset, unofficial is also fine. Please do attempt.

Could you post the changed igp32.inf that you used to install the .29 driver please?
I tried everything till now but it’ll allways say you changed the file, incompatible bla bla.
Strangely though in the drivers information window you put the screenshot up I got the same version simply by installing 25.50 - however if I go system hardware a very well notice that the installation failed!

it can’t force aero to work because the drivers you’re talking about are XDDM drivers (build on XP model). the igxpmp32.sys file has WinNT signature instead of Windows Vista sig in it… i tried similar thing to do with lakeport drivers and nothing…

Can this trick can be made with the latest drivers made to i945? Version 14.32.4
